Outfit: The cool kid

Beanie from Katvig, bib from Name it, body from Cubus,  tracksuit bottoms from Katvig
The little one likes it best when its comfy, especially during his "I don't want to sit still" stage. He is everywhere these days so tracksuit bottoms suits his "way of living". I went crazy at this shop in the west coast who had Katvig clothes. A bit pricey, but most of the things that I got were on sale. Check their website out: http://www.katvig.dk/collection/. Lots of colors which happens to be the little one's fave.

Confessions of a newbie mother: The travel bug bit my son

The little one's first encounter with the overseas travel bug. He took it quite well, extremely well.

Needless to say that I was a bit nervous about a few things; 4,5 hours flight, the heat, a house full of kids, but the bugbite didn't give him any huge discomfort. Yes his normal sleeping pattern and eating routine were a bit juggled by the new enviroment, but nothing too major to take away his good mood. As a result I think both the little one and his parents will be doing some more traveling in the future.

It is worth mentioning though, that traveling with a baby is of course a lot more work than traveling by yourself. Time management is the key. I've done both scenarios: Stressing and running to the gate (thinking we had loads of time, but managing to forget that checking in extra equipments such as a pram takes a bit longer) and having a little more time on your hand to even manage to pop by the duty free section. I must say that I really prefer the latter one.  And the latter situation happened to be our choice for this trip which work out splendidly.

Once we arrived at our destination, Cyprus, we didn't make any definite plans, cause it's just not possible. You are not really your own boss anymore. The little one pulls all the strings. So didn't get to do my normal sightseeing and sink in all the culture. Instead there were lots of lazy days by the pool, which isn't so bad actually. I got the hang of it, so much that we are probably going back next year.

Confessions of a newbie mother: Oslo by night

I wrote this a while back...I'm glad I found it again.

I like Oslo by night. So peaceful even though a view of the city lights at a distance from my balcony is all I get these days.

Every now and then I see them at 3 am, in their heels, from their cabs with their phones in their hands. As the look of it, it's been a long night for them too. I used to be one of them, dressing up, drinks, late nights. But now my late nights are spent inside in my pajamas, usually waiting, waiting for him to communicate in his own little way. And we he wakes up, I'm there. He know's I'm there. I like to know that he knows that I'm there.

My hubby wakes up when I get back. He sighs when I tell him that sleep is overrated. At daytime when the fatigue is at its worse, I tell him sleep is a luxury. My hands are tied, nothing I can do about the situation. And the sitch, well we have a baby here. And here is where I want to be right now. And here is good. Oslo by night is good.

Confessions of a newbie mother: Looking back....

over my shoulder. I do that often these days. An what a beautiful sight I'm hit with: My son playing on his mat.

I would like to sum up 2011 in two words: blissfully difficult. It doesn't really make any sense, but that's whats this whole year has been about. Nothing made sense. Being sick for the whole pregnancy didn't make sense. Having a mild depression when the little one came didn't make sense. The little one didn't make sense. A rather difficult time.

In the midst of it all there were tiny moments that made the shady grey turn to bright pink. It was a moment of bliss. At first, I felt it just for a second so I easily brushed it away by going back to my loop of dark thoughts. Then gradually seconds turned into minutes, turning into hours.

Looking back over my shoulder and I spot the little one. I smile and hopefully will keep on smiling in 2012.

Confessions of a newbie mother - The difficult part and the hard part

Nearly four months ago I was lying on the hospital bed begging for the midwife for a cesarean section. The little one had just popped his head out, eager to discover this new world. I barely noticed his debut as I was so exhausted from all the pain and the physical strain. I just basically wanted it done and over with, hence me yelling out for the easiest way out (though a bit too late). Who would have guessed that this experience would be the easiest part of becoming a newbie mother.

Needless to say, my road to baby world has been quite bumpy, being sick for 8 out of 9 months of my pregnancy. However, I thought it would be bearable once I had the little one in my arms. That I would feel total bliss and forget all the pain. Truth be told, the first couple of months of baby world has been the hardest part. Again, don't want to bore you with the details, but there has been days where I barely can see because of my puffy eyes. And the exhaustion I felt while giving birth, heaven compared to the exhaustion I've felt during the first couple of months of baby world. Mentally I was in bits and pieces, but trying to hold up for the little one and my hubby. Admitably I had to confess to hubby and to myself that I just wasn't feeling the bliss. I was struggling....

Four months into the game and bliss decided to show up. Not everyday of course, but I've felt it creeping up to the surface when the little one smiles or every morning when he is making "conversation". Some mothers say that it gets easier just around this period. Golden moments, until it gets hard again round about the age of 2. I probably will not be prepared for that to come. At least I can be honest, admit to myself and everyone else that sometimes it's a struggle.

Bliss mixed with a tad bit of exhaustion

Confessions of a newbie mother - Poop

Picture this scene: My newborn is lying on the changing mat. He is a bit uneasy as he is suffering from a lot of gas. What makes the situation worse is the fact that he hasn't been able to poo for a couple of days. I look at him with worried and puffy eyes. As his diaper was a bit smelly, I was hoping to see some defecation, but it was just the gas that had finally passed through. I guess I should be thankful for that. As I started to prep for a new diaper I see his face suddenly turn red and the sting of stench filled the bathroom. I looked down and I saw the mess that he had made. My baby was pooing on the changing mat. I should have been annoyed by the mess, but instead I just started to cry. Happy tears. I was so happy that he had finally pooed, that the foul odor, the staining on the mat and his clothes didn't bother me at all.

Poop, my life revolves around poop these days. It may sound simple, but it's not, especially not for the little one. Which means, it's not easy for me either. I feel helpless when he sometimes pushes in agony. There's nothing much I can do but cuddle him, give him a gentle touch on his chin, his hand and so on. Some days are better than others of course, but the feeling of helplessness is basically present in many aspects. Poop is just a tiny part of it, a smelly part.

Wouldn't it be easier if the baby came out with a manual that guides you through their needs. Or better yet that they were able to communicate through speech. Imagine if they could tell you this while lying on the changing mat: "Ok, I may not poo now, but it's coming. Maybe you should rub my stomach, that may help."
Would make life as a mother a lot easier.

Confessions - The kid thing

I wrote this really heartfelt long post about my first couple of weeks as a mother, but instead of my rambling (and the fact that I'm too tired to proofread) I'll leave you with a quote from the movie "The Back-Up Plan" instead (which was really crappy by the way):

Stan: What's it like, the whole kid thing?
Playground Dad: It's awful, awful, awful.
Then a small moment happens, that's so magical. that makes it all worthwhile.
